where ψ0 = exp(–r/a0). Evaluate the integral shown above by making use of the relation p4 → h4(∇2)2. (Hint: Recall the relation ∇2(r–1) =–4πδ() where

CHAPTER 8

ELECTRONIC STRUCTURE OF ATOMS

In this; chapter we consider atoms having two or more electrons. The simplest system which exhibits the repulsion between electrons is the He atom. We treat this system by means of the perturbation and variation theories. We then use the first excited manifold of states of He to illustrate the construction of antisymmetric wave functions.

The spectra of many-electron atoms can be qualitatively explained by vector coupling models for the angular momenta. The problems included here illustrate this method as well as dealing with the indistinguishability of equivalent electrons and the Pauli Exclusion Principle,. Considerable attention is given to the determination of Russell-Saunders terms and to the application of the Condon-Slater rules to the determination of the energies of these terms.
